Obituary for William Hayward "Steve" Stephens Jr.

STEPHENS, William Hayward “Steve” passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, surrounded by his family. Steve, AKA Pawpaw, was preceded in death by his father, William Hayward Stephens, Sr., mother-in-law, Hazel Brown Fegaro, and precious grandson, Junah McCain Stephens. He is survived by his beloved wife, Katherine, his cherished children, Ashley & Butch Newcomb and Brad & Diana Stephens, his precious (and spoiled) granddaughters, Katie Gatlin, Laila Stephens, and Emie Stephens, his mother Elizabeth (Betty) McCain Stephens, sister Pam and Dennis Bowden, brother, Allen and Susan Stephens, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rick and Giny Byrd, Mike and Kay Byrd, Harry and Owene Fegaro, Angela Byrd, and many loved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and special friend, Steve Locklar.

Steve, an avid sportsman, loved Alabama and New Orleans Saints football, Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Rays baseball, and his favorite – GOLF. He made many life-long friends playing baseball from a young age and softball and golf as an adult. He loved golfing on Sundays with his Dog Fight friends and serving in the Wetumpka Lions Club. An employee of Flowers Baking Company for 40 years, he made many friends of his fellow vendors, store owners, and employees.

Visitation for Steve will be held at Gassett Funeral Home on Saturday, March 26, 2022, from 5:00 pm CDT to 7:00 pm CDT. Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, March 27, 2022, at 2:00 pm CDT, with Pastor Chuck Glasscock officiating.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude for the love, care and support shown to them by the staff, and doctors at the Jackson Hospital ICU. A special thanks to Dr. Raghu Mukkamala for his extreme kindness.
