Obituary for Darrell W. Smith

SMITH, Darrell W., beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 after a brief illness. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama on December 1, 1943 to William James Smith and Virginia Strock Smith. Darrell grew up in Pleasant Hill, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1961, Darrell worked briefly before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1965. He was trained as an electrician and was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Darrell married Marlene Tennant on June 29, 1968. They welcomed two daughters, Marcy and Darlene. In 1978, Darrell moved his family to Deatsville and began working as an electrician in the maintenance division of Union Camp Corporation at the Prattville Mill. He later retired from what had then become International Paper in 2009.

Darrell enjoyed both computers and the outdoors. He loved spending time with his daughter, Darlene who assisted him with numerous projects, both big and small. He also delighted in his grandchildren, Rudy Smith, Andy Gregg, Rebecca Perdue, and Ryan Perdue. His favorite vacations usually included one or more of his grandchildren and were often in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, where he spent time hiking in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, William (Bill) and Virginia. He is survived by his loving wife, Marlene, his daughters, Marcy Smith Perdue (Rod), Darlene Smith Gregg (Forrest), and four grandchildren, and his brother Gary Kirk Smith (Miriam).

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family request that a donation be made in his memory at Montgomery Cancer Center.
