Obituary for Byron "Sport" Holley Sr.

Byron Holley Sr. “Sport”, 90 years old from Eclectic, AL was born June 16, 1932, went to be with Jesus on Friday, September 16, 2022.

Visitation will be at Gassett Funeral Home, Wetumpka, Alabama from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 20, at Gassett Funeral Home, and will lie in state one hour at Mt. Hebron church prior to services.

The funeral will be held at Mt. Hebron East Baptist Church, Eclectic AL. on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. Chaplin Matt McCord will officiate the funeral; and music will be by Mack Daugherty with Graveside service following.

He was preceded in death by his wife Katye Holley, and they were happily married for 59 years. Byron was devoted to his wife all those years and the caregiver for the last 11 years of her life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Abe and Mattie Holley; four brothers – Heflin, Rudolph, Albert, and Herman Edward Holley; and 2 great grandchildren – Sophia Parker and Barron Ash Jackson.

He is survived by one sister, Eunice Thompson and four children – Byron Woodie Holley Jr. (JoAnn), Marty Holley (Shari), Debbie Daugherty, and Sharon Heisler (Monte); 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Byron proudly served his country in the United States Army for four years in the Korean war and was a dedicated employee of CSX Railroad retiring with 30 years of service as an engineer.

He was a loyal member, deacon, and treasurer at Mt. Hebron East Baptist Church. He loved his family and friends, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating & family recreation on Lake Martin. He also enjoyed gardening, table games, and playing softball in the front yard with his children, grandchildren and neighborhood kids.

Pallbearers will be Jack Holley, Frank Holley, Camron Brown, Zach Hall, Randy Johnston, and Jarrad Speaks.
Byron will be missed beyond measure.
